Gold Coast signs contract for Solar Hybrid Ferry service

NEWS RELEASE
15th December, 2006

GOLD Coast Mayor Ron Clarke joined Solar Coast Cats directors, Ken Fitzpatrick and Laurence Baum, in officially signing a contract this morning allowing the company to operate a passenger ferry service on the Gold Coast.

Solar Coast Cats will establish and operate the service privately, with Council providing five new pontoon landing places adjacent to public land, for the exclusive use of the passenger ferry service.

The design and construction of the pontoons will proceed next year.

According to Mr Fitzpatrick, today’s signing underlines Council’s commitment to providing more efficient public transport services on the Gold Coast.

“Solar Coast Cats has a three stage plan that will see ferries initially travel between Paradise Point and Broadbeach, with a number of stops along the Broadwater.

“They’ll include stops at Aqua at Labrador, Australia Fair at Southport, the Marina Mirage precinct, Evandale and Appel Park in Surfers Paradise.

“We also intend to extend into Hope Island, Coomera and Nerang,” he said.

Mr Fitzpatrick said the ferries would be a tourist attraction 'in their own right' as they would form the first solar hybrid-driven service in the world.

It’s planned for the first services to be in operation by the fourth quarter of 2007.

The contract was won with the design of the Solar Sailor 100pax solar hybrid ferry. Solar Sailor Holdings Limited is a part owner of Solar Coast Cats.
