Ferry Quiet

Outside Magazine | September 2006

By Arnie Cooper

Sightseers will have a peaceful new way to tour San Francisco Bay.

Cars aren't the only machines going hybrid. Starting in September 2008, visitors wanting a lift between San Francisco Wharf and Alcatraz Island can hop on America's first salr-, wind-, and diesel-powered ferry. Solar Sailor, a 600-passenger trimaran being built for Hornblower Cruises, will emit about half the pollutants of similarly sized conventional ships and will run partly on sun-charged electric engines, meaning passengers will lose the noise and fumes of an ordinary ferry in favor of fresh air and the sound of seabirds. If all goes according to plan, Hornblower will have a second craft in operation by 2011.
