Pole Spear Buying Guide

The pole spear gives an up-close and personal feel of the hunting experience and is the ideal choice for the diver who wants to stoke his/her sense of pride as an apex predator. When on the market for a pole spear, there are a number of factors you want to consider to ensure you get the best value for money.

Our buying guide reviews the best pole spears on the market based on their specified features and customer feedback to give you the best options to choose from. We also take it a step further and outline the qualities you should be on the lookout for in a pole spear before you make a purchase.

The length of your pole spear is one of the most important considerations to make as it directly affects the type of fish you can hunt and the range. If you want to hunt smaller fish, then a shorter pole spear is the ideal choice. These sacrifice weight for higher projection to catch the quicker smaller fish in time. For larger fish, a longer, sturdier spear pole is ideal and will give you enough rigidity to withstand the struggles of your captured prey.

The range of your pole spear is basically the length of your spear. The longer the spear, the longer the range of your spear.

In general, spear poles can stand anywhere between four to nine feet in length, the shorter spears for higher speeds and smaller kill, and the longer spears for bigger kill.

Material Composition

How well your pole spear functions and for how long, depends on the materials from which it’s made. A pole spear has to be rigid enough to hold down struggling fish, flexible enough to absorb the vibrations, and must be highly corrosion resistant.

Materials like fiberglass, carbon fiber, Aluminium, and stainless steel are the most common you’ll find in pole spears. Carbon fiber and fiberglass pole spears are much lighter and thus, easier to load, and are quicker underwater. Their low weight, however, means lower momentum, ideal for catching smaller fish.

For bigger fish, materials like Aluminium and stainless steel are ideal as these are heavier, and even though slower, pack more piercing force behind them.

Pole spears have to be very portable as a lot of spearfishers are also travelers. To ensure this, most pole spears come in dismountable configurations that allow you to break the total length into three or four smaller units. Three or four-piece configurations are the most common and allow you to pack the pole spear into a traveling bag easily. Smaller and more pieces allow for more compact packaging but will also need more time to assemble once you arrive.

Spear Tip

Pole spears come with single, double-barbed, or paralyzer tips. Single-barbed spear tips are larger and thus great for catching bigger fish, while paralyzer tips start with three prongs, go up to five prongs, and are great for catching smaller fish. The multiple prong design of the paralyzer helps prevent fish from spinning free and more attack points to lessen the chance of escape.

Other great tip designs include the flopper tip that allows for a one-way piercing action and keeps the fish pinned down and hooks the flesh as it struggles. Slip tips come with a tethered tip that slips off after impact and are great for much larger fish that may break the pole if held down directly
